Hunter dies after fall from tree in Kota Belud’s Sapoda forest


KOTA KINABALU: A man died after he was believed to have fallen from a tree while hunting in Kota Belud district, Saturday (Feb 28).

The 44-year-old was reported unconscious by his friend, who was also with him, during the incident at the Sapoda forest.

Kota Belud Fire and Rescue chief Elge Bakuk said they received a distress call from the friend at around 7.45pm, and a team of five was sent to respond.

“The location is about 39km away, and our personnel had to walk another 3km to reach the scene, as the area was not accessible by cars,” he said in a statement on Sunday (March 1).

He said firemen had walked to the area with Health Ministry officials as well as rangers.

“Upon arrival, medical officials conducted checks on the man before pronouncing him dead,” said Elge, adding that the victim was taken out of the forest on a junkin stretcher.

The body was handed over to waiting police once the rescuers reached the main road, he said, noting that operations on site ended at 10.56am.
