Penang Deputy CM arrives at MACC office in George Town

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid (PKR) arrived at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office here at Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah.

Mohamad arrived in a SUV at about 9.40am on Monday (March 2).

He was seen entering the graftbuster office wearing a white shirt and was accompanied by an assistant.

It is uncertain why he was at the state office but it is believed to be in connection with the investigation of the alleged abuse of state zakat funds.

Last month an MACC investigation team visited several offices suspected of being involved to obtain relevant documents, and statements from two individuals believed to be connected to the case have been recorded by the MACC.

The allegations are being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009, which relates to abuse of office for gratification.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow also said the state government is giving the MACC full latitude to conduct an independent investigation into the alleged abuse of power and will not interfere or carry out an internal investigation into the matter.

The alleged abuse was first raised by an Opposition assemblyman during the state assembly sitting at the end of last year.

Penang PAS information chief Muhammad Fawwaz Muhammad Jan has called for the resignation of Mohamad and described the nature of the case as having eroded the trust of the Penang people in the state's religious institutions.
