Perlis MB’s position in limbo after reps withdraw support

PETALING JAYA: The position of Mohd Shukri Ramli (pic) as Perlis Mentri Besar is in limbo after several assemblymen are said to have withdrawn their support for him.

The assemblymen are believed to have lost their confidence in Mohd Shukri and said to be unhappy with the way the state was being run under his leadership.

Sources said the assemblymen were also unhappy that Mohd Shukri’s son is facing corruption charges and that the Mentri Besar had initially been questioned by anti-graft authorities.

Last year, Mohd Shukri’s son Mohd Syafeeq claimed trial to a charge of submitting false claims.

While the number of assemblymen who withdrew their support for Mohd Shukri is not clear, it is believed that all of Bersatu’s five representatives were involved.

The five Perlis Bersatu assemblymen are Abu Bakar Hamzah (Kuala Perlis), Izizam Ibrahim (Titi Tinggi), Megat Hashirat Hassan (Pauh), Wan Zikri Afthar Ishak (Tambun Tulang) and Marzita Mansor (Sena).

It is understood that the assemblymen had submitted a statutory declaration (SD) to the Raja of Perlis last week, informing the Ruler that they had withdrawn their support for the Mentri Besar.

Mohd Shukri, who is from PAS, is currently being hospitalised in Kuala Lumpur after he is said to have suffered chest pain, Bernama reported.

When contacted, Bersatu vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu declined to comment on this development.

“I’m so sorry, I can’t give you any comments. I don’t have information (on the issue),” he said via a WhatsApp message.

There are 15 state assemblymen in Perlis, with PAS holding nine seats and Bersatu holding five.

PKR’s Gan Ay Ling is the sole opposition member, who is said to have also submitted an SD.
