Azam hints at possible departure in 2026

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki (pic) has hinted that his term as the top graft buster may end next year.

Azam said his contract has been extended three times, which has raised unease among certain quarters, Sinar Harian reported.

“Many people don’t like me, even Rafizi does not like me and said not to resume my term.

“My term may come to an end next year,” he was quoted as saying on Wednesday (Dec 10).

He also stressed that it is not important who the next MACC chief commissioner is, as long as the fight against graft continues.

“What’s important is that my successor will continue the agenda of uplifting integrity, promoting good governance and enforcing anti-graft laws without fear or favour,” he said.

Previously, the media reported that Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli proposed that Pakatan Harapan take immediate steps to restore public confidence in the coalition’s commitment to fighting corruption following its landslide loss in the recent Sabah state polls.

Rafizi had said the first step could be not resuming Azam’s contract as MACC chief commissioner.

He also stressed that any contract extension would tarnish Pakatan’s and PKR’s credibility as a party firm against corruption.
