Works Ministry seeking info on removal of road barriers at site of fatal T'ganu crash

KUALA LUMPUR: Anyone with information on the alleged removal of road barriers at KM52 of the Kuala Jeneris-Sungai Gawi-Aring road in Terengganu, where two people died after a car plunged into a ravine, is urged to come forward and inform the Works Ministry.

"If the barriers were moved, it definitely wasn't us," Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi (pic) told reporters after the ministry's monthly assembly here on Monday (Dec 8).

"It was not the Public Works Department (JKR) that moved it."

He said the department always complies with standard operating procedures, with precautionary measures taken in the event of structural collapses or similar issues.

"We are already carrying out an investigation – that’s normal. We go to the location and investigate... according to JKR SOP.

"We want to know who moved the barriers. If anyone knows, please inform us," he added.

The fatal accident involving a sports utility vehicle (SUV) that claimed the lives of a soon-to-be-married couple occurred on Friday (Dec 5).

The accident is believed to have happened after the vehicle, travelling from Hulu Terengganu towards Gua Musang, entered a road that had been closed following a landslide.

Hulu Terengganu OCPD Supt Sharudin Abd Wahab had said that barriers and warning signs installed at the landslide site were moved by irresponsible parties.
