KOTA KINABALU: Sabah today mourns the loss of Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, a leader long described as fearless, uncompromising and unafraid to speak his mind, traits that made him one of the most recognisable figures in the state’s political arena.
Leaders from across the political spectrum have paid tribute to the veteran politician on social media, many recalling not only his fiery presence in Parliament but also his relentless commitment to the communities he represented in Sabah’s interior.
Sabah Head of State, former chief minister Tun Musa Aman said Bung’s absence would be deeply felt.
“During his lifetime, he gave immense service to Sabah in his capacity as Deputy Chief Minister. His dedication and efforts will continue to be remembered by the people,” he said, extending condolences to Bung’s wife and family.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong also conveyed his condolences.
“My condolences to the family of the late Datuk Seri Bung Moktar bin Radin, the Sabah BN chairman who passed away early this morning. His passing is a great loss to all of us. His service and contributions to the nation, especially Sabah, will always be remembered. May his soul be blessed,” he said.
Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah’s president Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup said the loss was hard for many who had watched Bung fight tirelessly for his constituency.
“His leadership was significant. His firmness and courage in championing the rights of the people will never be forgotten,” he said.
Parti Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal reflected on their long political journey since their Umno Youth days.
“There are many memories and experiences we shared throughout our long political journey,” he said, offering prayers and strength to the family.
Tenom Umno chief Datuk Raime Unggi said he had lost more than a political colleague.
“He was a comrade in the struggle. I have lost a friend and a leader. May Allah grant strength and calm to the family he leaves behind,” he said.
Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah president Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah said Bung’s death was received with a heavy heart.
“He was a brave friend. His contributions to Sabah politics will always be remembered,” he said, extending condolences to Sabah Umno, Barisan Nasional and Bung’s family.
As tributes continue to pour in, Sabah mourns not just a veteran politician, but a man whose presence shaped conversations, stirred debates and left an imprint that will not fade easily.
Bung Moktar, 66, passed away early Friday at a private hospital in Kota Kinabalu due to complications from a severe lung infection and kidney failure.
He had won the Lamag state seat in the Nov 29 Sabah election just days earlier.
