KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has received RM89.461mil in dividends and taxes from SMJ Energy Sdn Bhd (SMJE).

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor witnessed the handing over of mock cheques from SMJE group chief executive officer Datuk Dr Dionysia Kibat to Finance Ministry permanent secretary Datuk Mohd Sofian Alfian Nair at the state assembly building here on Tuesday (July 21).

The dividends are split into payments of RM50mil for the financial year ended 2025 and RM37.96mil in state sales tax for last year.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Department, SMJ Energy has cumulatively paid RM210mil in dividends to the state government since 2023.

The dividends are from distributable reserves, backed by a solid balance sheet, a stronger cash position, and continued disciplined financial management across the group, it read.

As at Dec 31 last year, SMJ Energy Group's total assets stood at RM4.82bil, with a recorded profit after tax of RM58.7mil despite ongoing economic, social and geopolitical volatility.

During the event, Dionysia also handed over corporate social responsibility contributions (CSR) of RM1mil for the Sabah Government Scholarship Fund to state Public Service Department director-general Datuk Norlijah Danin, and RM500,000 to Yayasan Kebajikan Sabah (YKS) director Datuk Diyanah Abdullah.

Hajiji said the dividend payment and state sales tax handover reflected SMJE’s sustainable financial performance and demonstrated the company’s success in fulfilling the state government’s mandate to increase Sabah’s participation in the oil and gas sector.

He added that the CSR contributions underscored the state-owned company’s commitment to human capital development and social welfare initiatives in Sabah.

SMJ Energy chairman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the company's performance demonstrates the value of managing Sabah's strategic assets with discipline, professionalism and a long-term perspective.

“Our responsibility is to manage the State's strategic investments prudently, so they continue delivering sustainable returns and lasting benefits for Sabah, not only today but for future generations," said Masidi who is also Deputy Chief Minister II and state Finance Minister.

Also present were State Secretary Datuk Zainudin Aman, Sabah Attorney General Datuk Brenndon Soh, SMJE chief operating officer and executive VP (Upstream) Datuk Albert Lo, and senior SMJE officials.
