Illegal pyrotechnics cause Kulim fireworks blast injuring 22, says Home Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: The fireworks explosion at Paya Besar, Kulim, that injured 22 people was caused by the ignition of illegal pyrotechnic materials.

The Home Ministry said the incident occurred at about 2.30am on October 20 while the public was watching a fireworks display.

“Several victims were sent to hospitals for treatment, while others received outpatient care,” it said on Wednesday (Oct 22).

“The sale, possession and use of unapproved fireworks or firecrackers are prohibited under the Explosives Act 1957,” the ministry added.

It said the case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 and Section 326 of the Penal Code.

The ministry said two individuals suspected of setting off explosives without valid permits have been detained.

“Investigations focus on possible negligence, illegal possession and handling explosive materials without authorisation,” it said.

It warned that stern action will be taken against any party found violating the law.

This includes revoking approvals for operators who fail to comply with regulations.

The ministry reminded the public and event organisers to prioritise safety and follow guidelines set by the ministry and police.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to all victims and their families and pray for their speedy recovery,” it said.

It said it will continue to monitor the situation with police, especially during festive seasons.

It urged all parties to obey existing laws and regulations.

“We remain committed to maintaining national security, safeguarding the people’s interests and ensuring public order,” it added.
