Couple remanded over firework explosion in Kulim


ALOR SETAR: A man and a woman have been remanded for seven days beginning Tuesday (Oct 21) to assist in investigations into a firework explosion during a Deepavali celebration in Paya Besar, Kulim, that left 22 people injured.

Kulim Magistrate Nur Hamizah Mat Shah issued the remand order against the suspects, aged 34 and 23 respectively.

Kulim OCPD Supt Zulkifli Azizan said the remand, which runs until next Monday (Oct 27), was to facilitate investigations under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1958 and Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt.

On Monday (Oct 20), police confirmed the arrest of the duo, both with prior criminal records, following the blast which occurred during Deepavali celebrations.

Police have since obtained a 22-second video recording of the explosion, which led to the arrest of both suspects in Taman Senangin and Paya Besar on Monday (Oct 20) evening.

In the early hours of Deepavali, a man was seriously injured while 21 others, including a Bangladeshi national, sustained minor injuries after firecrackers exploded along Jalan Paya Besar.

In the incident that occurred at about 12.45am, the man who was seriously injured suffered a 5cm laceration on his forehead due to the explosion.

The other 21 victims suffered minor burns and cuts caused by firecracker residue, particularly on their hands.
