Kulim fireworks explosion: 21 victims discharged, one referred to Penang Hospital


ALOR SETAR: The Kedah Health Department says 21 victims injured in a fireworks explosion in Kulim have received treatment and have since been discharged from the hospital, while one is undergoing further treatment.

In a statement on Friday (Oct 24), the department said a victim who suffered a head injury was referred to Penang Hospital for further treatment.

“Five victims were admitted to Kulim Hospital following the blast, three of whom underwent surgery successfully.

“All five have now been discharged and will continue with follow-up treatment,” the statement said.

The remaining victims sustained minor injuries and were given outpatient treatment before being allowed to return home.

In the mishap which occurred around 12.45am on Deepavali (Oct 20), a man was seriously injured, while 21 others, including a Bangladeshi national, suffered minor burns and cuts after fireworks exploded along Jalan Paya Besar.

Two suspects have been remanded for seven days beginning Tuesday (Oct 21) to assist in investigations into the explosion.
