KOTA KINABALU: The remains of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir have been reburied in Kg Mesapol in Sipitang, 30 hours after she was exhumed for a post-mortem examination.

Despite the rain, family members, friends and locals turned up to pay their last respects as she was buried in the same place at the Tanjung Ubi Islamic Cemetery after arriving at about 1.15am from the Queen Elizabeth I Hospital here.

A team of forensic experts had carried out the post-mortem, which lasted about eight hours from 11am to 7.30pm on Sunday.

The body of the late Zara was exhumed at 7.30pm on Saturday for the post-mortem ordered by the Attorney General’s Chambers as part of investigations into her death.

Zara was found unconscious near a drain close to her hostel building at the religious school in Papar on July 16. She subsequently died from the injuries the next day and was buried at her hometown cemetery on the same day (July 17).

With the completion of the post-mortem, Sabah police have yet to indicate the next course of their investigations.

Zara's family lawyer Shahlan Jufri, who observed the post-mortem, had said that it was done transparently and with integrity, adding that the findings could not be revealed as investigations were still ongoing.

He told reporters following the end of the autopsy on Sunday that the post-mortem report was not a public document and could only be revealed in court if an inquest is ordered by the Attorney General to ascertain the cause of death.
