Post-mortem findings cannot be revealed yet, says family lawyer of Zara Qairina after autopsy completed

KOTA KINABALU: The post-mortem findings of Zara Qairina Mahathir could not be revealed as investigations were still ongoing, says the family’s lawyer Shahlan Jufri.

Speaking to reporters following the autopsy performed on Sunday (Aug 10), he said that the post-mortem report was not a public document and could only be revealed in court if an inquest is ordered by the Attorney General to ascertain the cause of death.

"I can confirm that the post-mortem was done in a very transparent manner and with integrity," said Shahlan, who observed the post-mortem being carried out by the pathologist and recorded by police photographers.

"We will discuss with Zara Qairina’s family on the next step after the funeral," he said.

He added that it was likely that the authorities would wait for police investigations to be completed before requesting an inquest to be held.

The autopsy on Zara Qairina’s exhumed remains was completed at 7.30pm on Sunday (Aug 10).

Her body was then brought out of Queen Elizabeth I Hospital here in a police truck at 9.25pm for a three-hour journey for reburial at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Mesapol, Sipitang, some 140km from here.

Zara Qairina, 13, died on July 16 after she allegedly fell from the third floor of her school hostel at SMA Tun Datu Mustafa in Papar, located about 45 minutes by car from here.
