Stop the 'satay politics' of fanning flames, Asyraf urges Umno members

BUKIT GANTANG: Umno members at all levels must immediately put an end to the culture of "satay politics" if the party wants to regain its strength and public support in the 16th General Election, says Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

The Umno secretary-general used the satay analogy for politics to describe the internal divisions that have plagued Umno, saying this is among the key factors weakening the party.

"Unity is fundamental. We must avoid the culture of stoking tension, forming factions and fuelling conflict among party leaders and members," he said.

"There are those who skewer, fan the flames, grill and flip things back and forth (sow discord). All of this must stop," he said after opening the Bukit Gantang Umno meeting here on Sunday (July 20).

Asyraf Wajdi added that Umno must also return to its core foundation and principles of defending the interests of religion, race and the nation.

He said anything that could distract the party from that mission, including the culture of "satay" politics, must be stopped. – Bernama
