JOHOR BARU: One of the Sungai Pulai helicopter crash victims, Constable RG Devendram, is still being sedated to limit his movement during the recovery process at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Hospital Sultanah Aminah here, says Comm Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim.
The Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order department director said the condition of all five victims who were injured in a police helicopter crash at Sungai Pulai during a mock nuclear training exercise on Thursday (July 10) is reportedly stable.
"Corporal Adline Liu Yan Siu, who is also being treated in the ICU, has regained consciousness.
"I had the opportunity to speak with four of the victims earlier and from my observation, they are stable. I hope they will recover in the near future,” he told reporters after visiting the victims at the hospital on Friday (July 11).
Meanwhile, Constable Devendram's brother RG Navindran, 39, said doctors informed him that his brother, who has served as a police officer for just over a year, was sedated due to a lung infection.
“I was shocked when I received the news from the Tanjung Kupang police station chief at around 11am yesterday.
“I was later told that my brother had a lung infection, likely due to drowning during the incident,” he said when interviewed.
Navindran, who is also a policeman at the Ipoh police headquarters, hoped that the public would pray for his brother’s full recovery.
Meanwhile, Asst Comm Faizul Muhammad, who piloted the helicopter during the exercise before the incident, is now able to eat and speak normally, according to his sister-in-law Lizah Omar, 46.
“My brother-in-law suffered fractured ribs, head injuries and trauma to his waist.
“But I think he is on the path to recovery as he even joked with us when we visited and asked me for some kuih,” she said.
She added that the father of four was initially supposed to accompany his eldest daughter to a university in Terengganu next week, but only his wife will be able to send their daughter off, due to his condition.
On Wednesday, the Eurocopter AS3555 Ecureuil known as “Squirrel” crashed about 21m from the jetty while performing a mock exercise, which was attended by personnel from Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand.
Two senior police officers with the rank of Assistant Commissioner and Superintendent, along with three other personnel, were sent to Hospital Sultanah Aminah shortly after the 10.25am incident.
