SUBANG: The acceptance of the first of four AW189 medium-lift helicopters will strengthen the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's (MMEA) capabilities in maritime enforcement, aerial surveillance and search-and-rescue operations.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the acquisition is part of government efforts to modernise national security assets and enhance MMEA's capabilities in search-and-rescue, medical evacuation (Medevac) and special operations.
"The AW189 is not merely an additional asset to the agency’s fleet but also reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding the people’s security, national sovereignty and strategic interests.
“Investment in security is a strategic investment to defend our sovereignty, protect the people and support the country’s economic stability and prosperity,” he said during the acceptance ceremony on Thursday (Aug 13).
Saifuddin Nasution noted that as a maritime nation with a Malaysian Maritime Zone spanning 556,285 sq km, the country requires rapid surveillance and response capabilities to address increasingly complex maritime security challenges.
"The AW189 has an operational range of up to 1,166km, a maximum speed of 313km/h and an endurance of up to five hours.
"It can operate day and night in various weather conditions, and is operated by a five-member crew while capable of carrying up to 14 passengers," he added.
He highlighted that these enhanced capabilities are crucial for search-and-rescue operations, where every minute is vital to saving lives at sea.
The acquisition of the four AW189 helicopters was approved under the fourth Rolling Plan of the 11th Malaysia Plan, with the contract running from Jan 19, 2024, to Jan 18, 2029.
As of July 24, MMEA had conducted 116,192 inspections, 26,253 searches and 562 arrests, with total seizures valued at more than RM4.38bil.
The agency has also executed 129 search-and-rescue operations involving 638 victims.
Saifuddin Nasution expressed appreciation to all parties involved in the procurement and delivery, emphasizing that operational success ultimately depends on the professionalism, integrity and dedication of personnel.
