Blue light and photoaging: Why staying indoors won’t protect your skin

Do you spend your mornings answering emails by a sunlit window, followed by an afternoon staring intensely at laptop and smartphone screens?

Or perhaps you only really notice the sun when you step outside for a quick lunch run or to settle a few midday errands.

Be it a gloomy overcast sky, a brief walk in the open air or hours clocked in front of digital screens, the silent consequences remain the same.

Continuous, unprotected exposure is a leading catalyst for premature skin ageing (or photoaging), actively carving out fine lines, deepening wrinkles and triggering stubborn hyperpigmentation and dark spots.

To put things into perspective, around 80% of the visible signs of skin ageing are caused by daily, incidental exposure to UV rays and pollution.

If you think staying indoors protects you, think again – it is estimated that 25% of oxidative cellular damage is actually induced by high-energy visible (HEV) blue light.

Maintaining skin health requires effective defence every single day, whether you have a busy indoor workday or are out on a cloudy afternoon.

More than just SPF

To address these modern lifestyle dilemmas, Eau Thermale Avene recently unveiled its Ultra Fluid Range at an experiential launch event on July 30, 2026. Comprising four sunscreen variants tailored to different skincare needs, the range features the brand's patented TriAsorB sun filter.

Speaking at the event, Pierre Fabre Singapore Pte Ltd Asia export business director Cristiana Irimescu highlighted how the collection resolves long-standing suncare trade-offs.

"For decades, consumers were forced to choose between prioritising skin health and cosmetic elegance," she said.

Reinforcing the importance of daily application, Radiant Clinique chief executive officer Dr Syairah Nadia Mohamad underscored the cumulative impact of daily sun exposure.

"Our skin doesn't differentiate between a sunny day and an indoor workday – we are exposed to sun damage every day," she explained.

The event highlighted why we need to change how we think about sun care, especially since 80% of lifetime sun exposure occurs during ordinary, daily life activities rather than on a beach vacation.

The brand’s latest launch provides daily sun protection in a dermatologist-backed lightweight formula designed for everyday use.

Featuring an ultra-fluid texture, the sunscreen is twice as light as standard sunscreen.

This allows for a seamless "one-second absorption" that completely eliminates the heavy, sticky or ghostly white residue usually associated with high-SPF products.

The science behind the TriAsorB filter

At the heart of Avene’s new range is its TriAsorB filter. This range features an advanced broad-spectrum filter designed to shield delicate facial skin from everyday UVA and UVB rays, while extending care to include high-energy visible (HEV) blue light. This daily coverage helps maintain the skin's natural condition.

Additionally, the range boasts a strictly clean formula – meaning absolutely no silicone, no alcohol and no controversial chemical filters – making it as gentle on sensitive skin as it is tough on blocking out environmental stressors.

One range, four ways

Because no two skin types or daily schedules look the same, Avene has introduced four distinct variants, making applying your daily skin defence an effortless habit:

> Ultra Fluid Invisible (SPF 50): An invisible matte-finish sunscreen that dries immediately with up to four hours of continuous skin hydration.

> Ultra Fluid Perfector (SPF 50+): A unifying tinted finish sunscreen that instantly evens out the complexion, making it the perfect makeup base or a lightweight daily alternative to BB cream.

> Ultra Fluid Radiance (SPF 50+): Perfect for reviving dull skin, it delivers a subtle, glowing, tinted finish with a fresh, healthy radiance that lasts up to eight hours.

> Ultra Fluid Oil Control (SPF 50): The newest launch, engineered with a dry-touch finish, delivers a 14-hour mattifying effect that actively regulates sebum secretion to keep shine firmly at bay all day long.

Protecting your skin should never feel like a tedious chore, nor should it force you to compromise on your favourite makeup look or outdoor activities.

Keeping your skin safe becomes second nature when your sunscreen feels as light as water and fits effortlessly into your existing routine.
