Chinese journalists take a tasty nasi kandar detour

A GROUP of Chinese journalists took a nostalgic detour during their visit to Malaysia by indulging in nasi kandar for lunch, while in the country to cover President Xi Jinping’s state visit.

For some, the meal stirred fond memories of their student days in Malaysia, Harian Metro reported.

Among them was Liang Liang, who goes by the Malay name Husna, and lectures in Malay at Yunnan Minzu University.

She said they made the stop before heading to Putrajaya for an interview with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“We chose nasi kandar to take home a taste of Malaysia,” she shared in a TikTok video.

In the one-minute 57-second clip, Husna and four fellow journalists are seen speaking fluent Malay as they order their meals, blending in seamlessly.

Their plates were piled high with rice drenched in curry, alongside dishes like squid, rendang and fried chicken.

> Several Indonesian film producers have expressed interest in securing the rights for the hit drama Bidaah.

The show has become one of the most-watched titles on Viu in both Malaysia and Indonesia, racking up 2.5 billion views.

Its writer and director, Erma Fatima, said the production team is still weighing the offers and will need to consult with Viu Malaysia, Utusan Malaysia reported.

“Some producers want to adapt Bidaah into a film in Indonesia, while many others are calling for a second season,” she said.

Reflecting on the drama’s success, Erma said its impact lies in its exploration of religious exploitation and cult practices — issues that resonate deeply with Indonesian audiences.

Bidaah tells the story of a woman ensnared in a cult that falsely claims to uphold religious truths, while in reality exploiting faith for personal gain.

The drama delves into how religion can be twisted for the sake of power and profit.
