SOME Tamil schools have been trying to stem the tide of falling student numbers by buying and operating their own school vans, Makkal Osai reported.
SJK (T) Ladang Chersonese in Kuala Kurau, Perak, was facing an uncertain future with just seven pupils in 2012.
Parent-teacher association (PTA) chairman M. Kathiresan said the school bought a van in 2014 with the cooperation of the PTA, former students association and the school board.
He said the school, which is around 100 years old, has shown significant improvement in education and co-curricular achievements.
He said they will hold a charity dinner to raise funds to buy a replacement van for the school.
Meanwhile, SJK (T) Ldg Lanchang in Mentakab, Pahang, is organising a charity gala and lucky draw to raise funds for a school van. Purchasing a van to provide transport for pupils will help to increase the numbers, said school PTA chairman Jegadeesan and board chairman Subramaniam Gopal.
The lucky draw will feature attractive prizes such as a motorcycle, they said.
