Dr Ling's foresight defined Malaysia's modern logistics sector, says FMFF

PETALING JAYA: With a foresight that would come to define an entire industry, Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik was remembered for laying the foundations of Malaysia’s modern logistics sector while shaping both policy and talent development.

The Federation of Malaysian Freight Forwarders (FMFF) said Dr Ling, the former transport minister, recognised early on that a strong, efficient and professional logistics industry would be a critical pillar of national economic growth.

“His vision extended beyond infrastructure and policy.

“He understood that people - skilled, trained and professional - would be the true drivers of progress,” the federation said in a statement on Sunday (April 5).

FMFF said his far-sighted leadership enabled the federation to embark on a structured and sustainable education and training programme for the industry.

It expressed deep appreciation for his “partnership and unwavering support”, recalling his instrumental role in facilitating a RM100,000 grant that served as the foundation for its training initiatives.

“That support was not merely financial. It was a powerful vote of confidence in the future of our industry,” it said.

Building on that foundation, FMFF established the Malaysian Institute of Freight Forwarders (MIFF), which has since trained thousands of industry personnel through accredited logistics and related programmes.

The federation said the initiative had significantly elevated professional standards, strengthened competencies and contributed to a more resilient and capable logistics sector in Malaysia.

“This enduring legacy stands as a testament to Dr Ling’s vision.

“He did not merely guide us; he showed us the path and empowered us to walk it with confidence and purpose,” it added.

FMFF said his contributions to the federation and the broader logistics industry were “immense and invaluable”, with an influence that would continue to be felt for generations.

“He will always be remembered with honour, respect and deep gratitude,” it said.

The federation also extended its deepest condolences, describing Dr Ling as a distinguished leader, a visionary public servant and a steadfast supporter of Malaysia’s logistics and transport community.

“May his legacy continue to inspire us, and may his soul rest in peace,” it added.
