Four nabbed, 3.4 tonnes of cooking oil seized in raid on smuggling ring in Terengganu

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has smashed a subsidised cooking oil smuggling syndicate operating in Terengganu and arrested four suspects.

Its Terengganu director Mohd Mufsi Lat said the four suspects, three men and a woman aged 20 to 40, were arrested and 3,400 kilogrammes of cooking oil packets, a car and a lorry were seized in the operation around Hulu Terengganu district at about 9.30am Sunday (Aug 23).

The raiding team stopped and inspected a lorry and a car believed to be used in the misappropriation of subsidised cooking oil and smuggling activities in front of a house in Kampung Bukit Diman, Ajil near here, he said.

Mufsi added that the total value of the seizures was around RM103,500.

He said the syndicate would buy cooking oil packs from various locations and store them at the house before selling them on the black market or smuggling them abroad.

The four suspects are being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.

Mufsi said the ministry has carried out 2,688 inspections throughout Ops Tiris 4.0 from March 16 to date, with eight suspects arrested and seizures worth RM415,837.62 made. – Bernama
