TOKYO: The Foreign Ministry launched a free consultation service with local lawyers for Japanese travellers and residents who have fallen victim to crimes in Thailand this month.

The service is in place also in China and the Philippines, and this move aims to strengthen the protection of Japanese nationals in Southeast Asia, where there has been a series of violent crimes involving Japanese nationals.

Depending on demand, the ministry may expand the service to other countries.

The service is available to Japanese nationals and their families who have suffered serious physical or psychological trauma due to crimes such as murder, assault or sexual offenses.

Eligible individuals may receive up to three free 30-minute consultations.

Japanese-speaking lawyers will provide explanations regarding local court procedures and claims for compensation.

Applications are being accepted at the Japanese Embassy in Thailand and the Consulate General in Chiang Mai.

According to the ministry, among Japanese diplomatic missions overseas, the Embassy in Thailand handled the highest number of cases supporting Japanese victims of crime last year, with 851 cases. - The Yomiuri Shimbun
