Tiger tracks detected near Kluang, Johor

KLUANG: Wildlife authorities have confirmed the discovery of tiger tracks in an agricultural area along the route from Ayer Hitam to Kluang, not far from Kampung Rahmat, the same location where a tiger sighting went viral on March 8.

State health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said there had been no new signs of the animal since the initial sighting and footage of the tiger in early March.

“However, on Saturday (April 4), members of the public alerted authorities to fresh tiger footprints near the agricultural zone, near the location where the big cat was first spotted.

“Johor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) has dispatched officers from Batu Pahat and Kluang districts to monitor the area,” he said here on Sunday.

Ling added that the department has also coordinated with the Malayan Tiger Protection Unit to support ongoing investigations into the matter.

He said a team is scheduled to visit the site on Monday to set up camera traps and determine the next steps.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant while in or near the area. Anyone spotting signs of the tiger should leave immediately and report to the nearest police station or Perhilitan office,” he added.

Last month, the tiger that was spotted lurking behind bushes near a plantation in Kampung Rahmat had rampaged, killing two cows and a goat in the village.

In the viral video, a farmer and his father spotted the tiger lurking near the bushes at the village and alerted the police and Perhilitan.
