19 Klang Valley schools showcase talent, teamwork through music
Young voices filled Subang Parade in Subang Jaya, Selangor, as students took to the stage in a celebration of music, youth and community spirit.
The Subang Jaya Merdeka Symphony Choir Competition brought together 11 primary and eight secondary schools from across the Klang Valley.
It provided a platform for students to showcase their artistic talents while building self-confidence, discipline and teamwork.
Held in conjunction with National Month and Malaysia Day 2026, the competition was launched by Subang Jaya deputy mayor Mohd Zulkurnain Che Ali.
“The Subang Jaya Merdeka Symphony is not just a choir competition, but a stage that gives our children the opportunity to showcase their talents, work as a team and experience the spirit of patriotism,” Mohd Zulkurnain said in his speech.
“Through the choir, children learn to listen to each other. They learn that a good performance does not depend on one voice alone, but on many voices united in harmony.
“This is also very close to the picture of Malaysia.
“We come from different backgrounds, but our strength lies in our ability to live, work and move forward together.”
Mohd Zulkurnain said showing love for the country also meant maintaining harmony, respecting diversity, preserving the city, and playing a responsible role in society.
SJK(C) Serdang Baru 1 in Seri Kembangan emerged as the winner in the competition’s primary school category, while SJK(C) Han Ming in Puchong came in second and SK Subang Jaya in Subang Jaya, third.
SMK Taman Tun Dr Ismail in Kuala Lumpur won top spot in the secondary school category; SMK Seafield in Subang Jaya took second place and SMK Sri Permata in Petaling Jaya, third.
There were special awards for Most Creative Choir, Best Vocals and Jury’s Choice.
The event was organised by Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) in collaboration with Petaling Perdana District Education Office and Hektar Property Services Sdn Bhd, which manages Subang Parade.
MBSJ Corporate and Strategic Management Department said in a media statement that the initiative aligned with local and global community development goals.
“In line with Subang Jaya Madani Smart City aspirations, the programme also supports community development through the ‘Smart People’ concept, which emphasises morality, knowledge and charity,” it said.
The city council said singing together also fostered community values through cooperation and togetherness.
The event supports the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2), which aims to nurture young local talent, while advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals – specifically SDG 4 (quality education) through talent development and SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities) through active public involvement.
Also present were Petaling Perdana PPD deputy district education officer Fadzlon Faisal, Hektar Property Services chief executive officer Aldela Puspa Nordin, Subang Parade centre manager Mohamed Mohamed Hanafiah and MBSJ Zone 1 councillor Chia Yew Ken.
