Floods: Klang tops list of Selangor's 56 hotspots

PETALING JAYA: Klang has emerged as Selangor’s primary flood hotspot, with 13 locations marked as high-risk ahead of the North-East Monsoon projected to stretch through to March.

Data from the Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) identifies 56 flood hotspots and 232 high-risk zones across the state based on last year's baseline figures.

After Klang, the Petaling district has 11 hotspots, Gombak has 10, and Hulu Langat accounts for nine.

Public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin (pic) said the state government had deployed its entire machinery to maintain peak readiness.

"The state disaster management committee has a strength of 7,677 personnel from various agencies," she said in a statement on Wednesday (Nov 4).

"This operational capability is supported by 708 land vehicles, 247 water transport assets and operational equipment including 5,739 tents, 1,950 life jackets, 141 water pumps, 48 water jets, 192 chainsaws and 20 drones for rescue, evacuation, and emergency response operations."

Selangor’s estimated annual rainfall for this year stands at 2,232mm.

As of Sunday (Nov 1), the state had recorded 1,460mm or 65% of its annual projection, with November and December expected to bring further monthly totals of 268mm and 230mm respectively.

Jamaliah said DID monitoring systems remain at maximum readiness, backed by 221 rainfall telemetry stations, 124 water-level telemetry stations, 140 warning sirens, and 72 IP cameras for round-the-clock monitoring.

Water flow management across the state is supported by 353 water gates and 161 fixed pump units.

A total of 1,161 temporary relief centres have been designated statewide.

Real-time updates on rainfall, river levels, flood forecasts, and warning sirens are available via the official Public InfoBanjir JPS Malaysia and Selangor DID portals.

The public can also access location-based weather tracking through the myCuaca 3.0 mobile application.

State authorities have urged residents to remain alert, prepare family emergency bags, avoid driving through flooded roads, and follow all official evacuation orders.
