Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) is set to undertake a phased RM28mil transformation of the SS15 area from 2027 to 2031.

Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said the project aims to address parking shortages, traffic congestion and walkability issues.

“The project will focus on placemaking, upgrading parking facilities and improving access for persons with disabilities.

“Of the total allocation, MBSJ will contribute RM20mil, while developers Titijaya Land and Gamuda Land will each provide RM4mil,” he said during a press conference after a full board meeting at MBSJ headquarters.

Rumaizi said the initial phase will begin at Jalan SS 15/4D and the back lanes between Jalan SS 15/4 and Jalan SS 15/4B.

“The pilot phase will serve as a platform to gather public feedback and test the effectiveness of modified traffic flows.

“We are also looking to improve the pedestrian experience at Jalan SS 15/4D in front of the SS15 LRT Station,” he added.

On Sept 21, StarMetro reported that while the bustling SS15 commercial area functions as a vital neighbourhood hub for Subang Jaya, its public spaces fail to support that role.

The report also stated that a placemaking study conducted by Think City for MBSJ, revealed that while businesses thrive indoors, outdoor spaces function merely as transit corridors rather than places to stop, rest and connect.

According to MBSJ, the RM28mil upgrade is part of a proposed RM46.42mil scheme.

The estimated allocation was put forward after the Think City’s study on user behaviour and revitalising this business district was completed.

The study also outlined five other phases, detailing proposed implementation schedules and preliminary cost estimates.

These include upgrading the SS15 social hub (RM15.1mil), turning SS15 into a zero-waste area (RM1.6mil), SS15 rejuvenation grants (RM800,000), community programmes and operational costs (RM700,000) and annual activities RM220,000).

For zero-waste efforts, MBSJ plans to set aside RM1mil for food-waste initiatives, RM500,000 for a waste baseline study and RM100,000 for awareness campaigns, targeting completion by 2028.

Rumaizi who was formerly the mayor of Ipoh, said his aim was to rejuvenate the SS15 area into a more vibrant area.

“We hope the rejuvenation will attract people to congregate for business and recreation,” he said.
