Volunteers in Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya collected almost 900kg of waste as part of the nationwide Malaysia Clean-up Day 2026.
Around 250 residents, students and staff from non-governmental organisations, Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) joined forces to collect 381.85kg of solid waste across Taman Aman, Taman Bandaran Kelana Jaya and Kampung Selamat in Petaling Jaya.
Recycling initiatives were also integrated into the day’s programme.
In partnership with Tetrapak, MBPJ held a Careton programme at the PJ Eco Recycling Plaza, where 81 participants turned in 3,100 beverage cartons weighing 55kg.
Complementing these efforts, a collection counter set up in Taman Aman gathered 331.12kg of used cooking oil.
MBPJ said, in a statement, that integrating green initiatives into the clean-up day reflected its ongoing efforts to build a culture of sustainability.
Separately, Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) spearheaded a clean-up drive at the SS15 wet market and nearby commercial hub.
A total of 550 volunteers gathered 482.3kg of waste, which comprised 278.75kg of recyclables, 149.55kg of non-recyclables, 45.6kg of used cooking oil and 2.5kg of electronic waste among others.
Participants included MBSJ personnel, KDEBWM workers, corporate partner Sumitomo Electric Wintec Malaysia Sdn Bhd, students from Inti International College and local schools, members of the Residents’ Representative Council and residents.
Also present were Subang Jaya assemblyman Michelle Ng and Subang Jaya deputy mayor Mohd Zulkurnain Che Ali.
The MBSJ event also featured a Zero Cigarette Butt Competition where 48 winners collected 27,000 cigarette butts.
There were also booths that showcased dengue prevention, eco-friendly products such as cocopeat and cocofibre, and KDEBWM’s i-Clean System app.
Organised by the Housing and Local Government Ministry, the annual nationwide clean-up effort aims to boost environmental awareness and foster community-led sustainability practices.
