WHAT began as a fundraising effort among bank employees to help 10 families celebrate Deepavali in 2012 has grown into an annual programme supporting 50 families today.

Led by Sarves Retnam, the initiative brings together current and former bank staff, who collect contributions from colleagues, relatives and friends to buy and distribute festive essentials.

The Deepavali Charity Programme held its 11th edition at SJK (T) Segambut in Kuala Lumpur. The initiative had paused temporarily during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Recipients included 15 families from SJK (T) Segambut, 10 from SJK (T) Fletcher and 25 identified by the organising committee.

They comprised single-parent households, families facing financial hardship and people with physical disabilities.

In a media statement, Sarves said donated items included sarees, Punjabi suits and chocolates, while a wheelchair was provided to one recipient.

Contributors also helped provide curry powder, flour, Deepavali goodies as well as traditional snacks.

Attendees were treated to lunch and hot coffee.

Sarves thanked donors, supporters and committee members for helping the programme reach more families.

“Your kindness has brought smiles, happiness, and hope to 50 families.

“We look forward to your continued partnership and support in the years ahead,” he said.
