More than 50,000 visitors filled a Bandar Sunway carpark, swaying to taiko drumbeats and immersing themselves in the traditional Japanese Bon Odori dance.
That was the spirit at the 50th Bon Odori Festival 2026, which returned to Bandar Sunway in Selangor, with its trademark blend of culture, colour and community.
Dressed in vibrant yukata, festival‑goers moved in unison around the yagura drum tower, drawing on a shared rhythm that symbolised remembrance, gratitude and togetherness.
The circular dance, performed to the beat of the big drum, once again proved to be the festival’s centrepiece, captivating both seasoned participants and first‑timers alike.
Children added to the festive charm as they tried their hand at kingyo‑sukui – the traditional goldfish‑scooping game often seen at Japanese summer festivals.
Laughter and cheers filled the air as they attempted to catch the fish using the delicate paper scoops before they dissolved in the water.
Food stalls were equally popular, with long queues forming for Japanese street favourites such as onigiri and wagyu skewers.
The aroma of freshly grilled snacks drifted across the venue, drawing visitors from every corner of the carpark.
Some families turned the open space into an impromptu picnic ground, enjoying quality time together as they soaked in the festive atmosphere.
The combination of cultural performances, traditional games and communal dining created a lively yet relaxed environment that reflected the festival’s enduring appeal.
The 50th edition of Bon Odori showcased how the celebration is one of the most anticipated cultural events in the Klang Valley.
