ONE of Penang’s most iconic cultural celebrations, the Penang Bon Odori Festival, will take place at Padang Kota Lama on July 18.
Penang state tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the annual event would be held from 5pm till 11pm.
“The Bon Odori Festival is not only a platform to showcase traditional Japanese culture, but also a meaningful celebration of Penang’s multicultural harmony and international exchange,” he said during a press conference at Komtar.
Wong also announced that registration for the Miss Penang Bon Odori pageant was open.
The competition will be held in two stages, with the preliminary round scheduled for June 20, from 2pm to 6pm at Gurney Paragon Mall.
The grand finale will take place on the evening of July 18 at Padang Kota Lama, alongside the main festival.
Now in its third edition following successful runs in 2019 and 2024, the pageant aims to provide more than just a platform for beauty.
“It is an important avenue to encourage youth participation, build confidence and foster personal growth.
“Participants will have the opportunity to develop communication skills and stage presence while gaining exposure to the creative industry, including event management, styling, photography and media production,” said Wong.
The competition offers cash prizes of RM1,500 for the winner, RM1,000 for the first runner-up and RM700 for the second runner-up, along with a sash, crown and trophy.
Special awards such as Miss Photogenic, Miss Talent, Miss Elegance and Miss Popularity will also be presented.
The Miss Penang Bon Odori pageant is organised by the Malaysian Japanese Society, with support from the Penang state exco office for Tourism and Creative Economy and various partners.
Wong encouraged young women to participate, describing it as a valuable opportunity to showcase talent and experience cultural diversity.
The registration deadline is 11.59pm on May 31.
Details can be found at the Malaysian Japanese Society’s official Facebook page.
Also present at the press conference was Consul-General of Japan in Penang Shinya Machida.
