Weekday trial run aims to maximise road capacity
A contra lane has been introduced along Federal Route FT001 in Jalan Skudai, Johor Baru during weekday morning peak hours to help ease traffic congestion heading into the city centre.
Johor works, transportation, infrastructure and communications committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh (pic) said the initiative aimed to make better use of existing road capacity rather than adding new lanes.
He said the contra lane was introduced because morning traffic volume heading towards the city centre was significantly higher than vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.
Mohamad Fazli, who is also Bukit Pasir assemblyman, said the contra-flow stretch covered about 6km, from Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) Gateway to Bandar Baru Uda.
He added that the lane operates from 5.30am to 9am, Monday to Friday, and is currently restricted to cars and vans.
Mohamad Fazli said the implementation was being closely monitored by a technical team, which would assess key indicators throughout the trial period.
“These include changes in travel time, traffic flow, safety aspects as well as feedback from road users.”
He added that findings from the assessment would determine whether the contra lane had achieved its intended purpose of improving traffic flow along the busy corridor.
“If the assessment shows a positive impact, this approach could be considered as one of the solutions to reduce congestion along the Skudai-Johor Baru corridor,” he said.
Mohamad Fazli thanked motorists for their cooperation and patience during the trial period.
“Our goal is to ensure that every available space on the road is used as effectively and efficiently as possible for smoother and safer journeys,” he added.
