RM20mil approved for new bridge in Paya Jaras, says Amirudin

PETALING JAYA: A new RM20mil road bridge will be built in Jalan Kubu Gajah, Paya Jaras, Selangor, next year to replace the one that collapsed during a thunderstorm early Wednesday (Nov 4).

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said funding for the project had been approved.

“I want the project to be given priority and closely monitored to restore access and ensure unobstructed river flow beneath the bridge,” he said in a social media post.

The bridge collapsed at about 2am today after strong currents in Sungai Subang eroded its riverbanks, according to the Petaling Public Works Department (JKR).

The collapse severed the main route linking Kampung Kubu Gajah and Paya Jaras Hilir, prompting authorities to close the road for safety reasons.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said a temporary bridge would be constructed within two to three weeks to restore vehicular access.

“The state government and department will build a temporary Bailey bridge within two to three weeks.

“Several alternative routes have also been prepared to facilitate residents’ journeys in the meantime,” he said.

Motorists travelling to Merbau Sempak and Kubu Gajah can use Jalan Merbau Sempak towards Masjid Nurul Iman in the meantime.

Amirudin also said 23 families, comprising 93 flood victims, had been placed at the relief centre at Dewan Seri Pagi MBSA as of 11am on Wednesday.

“I understand the anxiety of residents facing safety concerns, property damage and disruption to their daily routines.

“Aid and recovery efforts must be expedited to ease their worries,” he said.
