MINI 4x4 RC (remote-controlled) crawler enthusiasts now have a dedicated playground to test their skills, with the opening of the Bukit Mentok RC Crawler Track, a rugged 1.5km course built to simulate real off‑road conditions.
Kemaman RC Crawler Club (RCK) chairman Zulkarnain Ismail, 45, said the track in Chukai, Terengganu, is among the longest of its kind in Peninsular Malaysia and was designed to give hobbyists a realistic driving challenge.
The miniature vehicles – roughly one‑tenth the size of full‑scale 4x4s – must navigate steep climbs, uneven slopes and tight technical sections.
Constructed through gotong‑royong by RCK members, the course features hillside ascents, caves, suspension bridges, stream crossings and other obstacles intended to test both machine endurance and handlers’ skills.
“The track was built with challenging elements to push the vehicles and their operators,” Zulkarnain told Bernama.
“Safety is also prioritised, with ropes, ladders and lighting installed so activities can continue safely at night.”
RCK secretary Muhammad Adli Fahmi, 35, said Bukit Mentok’s popularity stems from its dual appeal: crawler fans can test their machines while enjoying a recreational hike.
He said most hobbyists take about an hour to complete the 1.5km route while operating their mini 4x4s.
For many enthusiasts, modifying their crawlers is part of the fun.
Mohd Badrul Amin Maharuddin, 28, said he upgraded his vehicle’s suspension and tyres specifically for the terrain.
“Every track has different difficulty levels, so we need to modify according to surface conditions.
“Otherwise, the vehicles can lose grip or flip over,” he said.
Despite their size, RC crawlers mirror the engineering of real off‑road vehicles.
Mohd Saiful Adha Shamsudin, 51, said most models replicate iconic 4x4s such as the Toyota Land Cruiser, Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, Land Rover Defender, Suzuki Jimny and Mercedes‑Benz G‑Class.
Prices vary depending on the model and specifications, ranging from RM1,000 to RM8,000.
With its challenging terrain, scenic setting and community spirit, the Bukit Mentok track has quickly become a hub for Malaysia’s growing RC crawler scene – offering enthusiasts a rugged test bed and a place to gather, compete and refine their off‑road skills.
