A PROPOSED bridge linking Sibu town centre to the west bank across Sungai Igan is moving closer to construction.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the bridge design was being worked on ahead of a tender process.

He said bidding would take place once the design for the bridge, set to be under 400m long, was ready.

“I would like to congratulate Sibu Rural District councillor Kevin Lau for proposing the bridge,” he said at an SUPP Chinese New Year gathering in Sibu.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg had previously said that the bridge would enable development on the west bank.

“From there, a new road will extend towards Mukah, opening up new inland areas.

“This road will connect to other parts of Sibu, creating a well-developed region.

“We must not lag behind Bintulu,” he had said, adding that Bintulu’s bridge resembled the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Abang Johari said the Sibu bridge would unlock land for agricultural activities in line with the state government’s focus on food security.

Lau said the project would boost economic development in the west bank, which houses a number of industries, and cut travelling time to Tanjung Manis and other areas.
