PENANG made history this year by honouring its largest-ever group of Indian recipients of state awards, a milestone that drew nearly 300 community and industry leaders to a distinguished recognition dinner.

Organised by the Northern Indian Business Group, the event at a hotel in Seberang Jaya celebrated the recipients of the Darjah Gemilang Pangkuan Negeri (DGPN), Darjah Mangku Pangkuan Negeri (DMPN), Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN) and Darjah Johan Negeri (DJN) –awards conferred by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to the state and community.

The ceremony was made even more meaningful with the presence of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, who graced the occasion as the guest of honour, acknowledging the community’s achievements and leadership.

In his welcoming remarks, Penang MIC chairman Datuk J. Dhinagaran said the event was held to recognise the significant role played by the Indian recipients in Penang’s development and community-building efforts.

“It is a well-deserved award for all, and it is indeed a great privilege to have the Yang di-Pertua Negeri gracing the occasion,” he said.

“This shows the Governor’s recognition of Indian businessmen and community leaders as pillars of society in Penang,” he added.

The dinner brought together business leaders, community figures and industry representatives, highlighting the broad spectrum of contributions from the Indian community across Penang’s social and economic sectors.

Among those present were Malaysian Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Penang) president Datuk S. Parthiban, Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MAICCI) national president Datuk Seri N. Gobalakrishnan and Pelita group managing director Tan Sri D. Ramesh.

State housing and environment committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo, who attended the dinner, later expressed his pride in witnessing the accolades bestowed on individuals who had worked tirelessly for Penang’s progress.

He said this year’s group of honourees marked an important milestone as it represented the highest number of Indian recipients ever acknowledged in a single year by the state.

“The Indian community has always been a strong pillar in shaping the social, economic and cultural progress of Penang,” he said.

“As one of the Indian representatives in the Penang State government, I consider it my duty to acknowledge, appreciate and uplift those who have contributed tirelessly to the advancement of the state and its people.”

Sundarajoo also extended his appreciation to the Northern Indian Business Group for hosting the recognition dinner, praising the leadership of Gobalakrishnan and Ramesh for their dedication in organising a meaningful event that strengthened community pride and encourages excellence.

“Their efforts in recognising outstanding individuals play an essential role in inspiring future generations and fostering unity and progress within Penang,” he added.
