Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) is offering RM700,000 in grants to fund low-carbon initiatives this year, making it the highest amount yet.

Iskandar Puteri mayor Ahmad Nazir Mohd Nasir said the amount reflected MBIP’s commitment towards developing a smart and sustainable city through various green activities.

“The Iskandar Puteri Low-Carbon Community Grant programme, which kicked off in 2021, has so far funded 94 community projects with a total of RM1.6mil.

“To date, we have reduced 410,314kg of carbon dioxide emissions through the programme,” he said in an interview.

The fifth edition of the programme aims to assist more than 20 community projects focusing on themes such as agriculture and food security, climate change and adaptation as well as environmental education and awareness.

Ahmad Nazir said the programme was open to individuals, communities, schools, management committees of worship, residents’ committees, joint management bodies, government agencies and non-governmental organisations located within the MBIP jurisdiction.

He said applications would be accepted until 5pm on May 2.

“Each applicant stands to receive up to RM50,000 for their proposed activities.

“We look forward to receiving applications for high-impact and value-adding projects.”

Meanwhile, he said a comic book titled Exploring the Environment with Noah and Friends had been pre-launched by the city council.

The publication for children, inspired by detective comics, was published with help from the grant programme.

“It serves to educate readers, especially primary pupils, about the effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals on the human body and environment,” he said.
