A TOTAL of 325 senior citizens received cash vouchers under Selangor government’s Skim Mesra Usia Emas (SMUE) initiative in conjunction with Chinese New Year.

The RM200 vouchers were given to recipients who had applied for it earlier at the Bukit Gasing assemblyman’s service centre.

Only those living within the Bukit Gasing state constituency and who earn below RM3,000 were eligible.

Bukit Gasing assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran hoped the distribution will help recipients celebrate Chinese New Year on a more joyful note.

“Covid-19 has changed many things and many people who used to have a steady income before the pandemic have lost their livelihood,” he said during the ceremony to distribute the vouchers at Giant Kelana Jaya Mall, Petaling Jaya.

The vouchers were redeemable for purchases made at the hypermarket.

Voucher recipient Lim Cheng Teik said every ringgit counts.

“RM200 will go a long way for my family,” he added.

Another voucher recipient, Richard Ee, said he was grateful to the state government.

“The voucher will help us buy items so that we can welcome the lunar new year,” he added. — By AMIRAH CHE RAMLAN
