Senior citizen rescued after being trapped in flooded Bukit Mertajam home

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A senior citizen had to be rescued after she was trapped in her house following flash floods at Taman Kota Permai on Thursday (Oct 29) morning.

The incident occurred after flash floods inundated several housing areas at about 7.30am.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department Operations and Firefighting Division assistant director John Sagun Francis said the 75-year-old victim was trapped inside her house in water up to a depth of about one foot following continuous heavy rain.

"Seven firefighters including the operation commander were dispatched from Bandar Perda fire station and arrived at the scene about 30 minutes after receiving a distress call," he said.

He said during the operation, the commander conducted an initial assessment before instructing the rescue team to carry out the operation.

He said the victim was successfully rescued and handed over to a family member who was at the scene.

The firefighters then monitored the area and found that the floodwaters were gradually receding.

After ensuring that there were no further hazards, the operation was called off at 11.42am.
