PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across five states, effective until 3pm on Thursday (Oct 29).

In the northern region, the warning covers Langkawi in Kedah.

On the east coast, the warning covers Pasir Puteh and Bachok in Kelantan, and the districts of Dungun, Kemaman, Marang, Kuala Terengganu, Kuala Nerus, Setiu and Besut in Terengganu.

In Pahang, it covers Kuantan, Pekan, Rompin and Jerantut.

In the southern region, the warning covers the districts of Kota Tinggi, Johor Bahru, Kulai, Mersing and Kluang in Johor.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.

The notice was issued by the department at noon on Thursday.
