AT 71, Syed Amran Syed Omar continues to provide assistance to disaster victims and is planning to help neglected senior citizens in his home state of Perlis.

He was presented with the Special Senior Citizen Award at this year’s National Senior Citizens Day celebration at Melaka International Trade Centre in Ayer Keroh.

The event was launched by Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

“When we are given an award, it motivates us to always help, no matter the time,” the septuagenarian said, as reported by Bernama.

“If we do nothing at this age, our health will be tested.”

Syed Amran, who is St John Ambulance of Malaysia Perlis chapter deputy commander and Kampung Hutan Ketiau Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) secretary, said he wished to continue serving society, including flood evacuees.

His future plans include a “lawat, rawat dan siar” (visit, treat and tour) programme for senior citizens in Perlis, as well as planning outings to boost their mental well-being.

Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) received the Senior Citizen Care Award under the local authority category.

Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohd Yazid Sairi, who received the award, said the welfare and well-being of senior citizens was a key focus for MBPJ.

“Petaling Jaya is home to some 830,000 residents, 7.5% of whom are senior citizens.

“That is why we place strong emphasis on the welfare and well-being of senior citizens.

“We have even drawn up the Senior Citizen Care Action Plan 2026-2030 to ensure their welfare is given proper attention.”

Mohd Yazid said the welfare of senior citizens depended on partnerships with non-governmental organisations, councillors and other government departments, so that the programmes would truly meet their needs.

He said the city council’s educational and health activities had received encouraging response from the residents.

MBPJ also offers a free ambulance service, including for senior citizens, said the mayor.

Also presented were awards in the corporate, statutory body, and employer categories.
