Petaling Jaya Old Town residents can look forward to a new community hall at Jalan Railway 1/2 in Section 1, Selangor, by the end of October.

Construction of the hall began on Oct 8 and its design was based on feedback from residents and Section 1B Rukun Tetangga (RT).

Bukit Gasing assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran said the hall would enable residents to host community activities.

“This is the first hall in my constituency to be built following seven rounds of public consultation,” said Rajiv.

“Section 1B RT and residents were involved in deciding on the hall’s design based on its usability.”

The 130sq m hall, which cost RM150,000, is funded by Selangor government and will be managed by the Petaling District Office.

Section 1B RT chairman Kok Kuan Yong said residents were glad Rajiv had helped them realise their wish to have a hall.

Kok said the hall would benefit 4,000 residents in Sections 1 and 2, which comprise about 1,000 houses.

“The majority of residents are aged between 60 and 90.

“We organise neighbourhood activities such as Dumpling Festival and Chinese New Year celebrations and Chinese chess events, but often conduct them outdoors under a canopy.

“We are looking forward to using our hall,” said Kok.

He said the RT would supervise it and manage bookings.

“We also conduct community policing activities weekly, and this hall will be useful for our meetings,” he added.

Meanwhile, Rajiv said he had been organising numerous community activities at the Bukit Gasing community centre in Section 17, Petaling Jaya.

“When the hall in Section 1 is ready, we will conduct similar activities here.

“We conducted smartphone tutorials in English for senior citizens in Section 17 and we could offer them in Mandarin here.

“Also being planned are exercise, sports, games and arts activities,” he said.
