KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional will contest the Melaka election using its own coalition logo following a High Court decision that temporarily halted action against its registration, says secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.
He said the coalition had agreed to use the Perikatan logo, while the seats to be contested and candidates to be fielded would be decided at subsequent meetings.
“We will use the Perikatan logo in the Melaka state election,” he told a press conference after the coalition's emergency supreme council meeting, which ended at 11.10pm on Sunday (Oct 25) at PAS headquarters here.
Takiyuddin said no decision had been made on the seats or candidates, including which component parties would contest them.
“We will hold several more meetings to finalise the seats we will contest and the candidates who will stand,” he said.
Perikatan chairman Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, after the same meeting, posted on Facebook that the coalition’s candidates for the Melaka polls will be announced next Thursday.
Perikatan’s decision to contest the state polls follows the Kuala Lumpur High Court's ruling last Thursday granting a stay on three actions taken by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) against it.
The actions included a show-cause notice requiring Perikatan to explain why its registration should not be cancelled, an order suspending its activities and the cancellation of its registration.
Takiyuddin said the stay meant the coalition could resume its normal operations while its judicial review proceeded.
“Perikatan is back to business as usual. The show-cause notice, suspension and cancellation have all been stayed,” he said.
He said the coalition's supreme council had discussed the court proceedings and received legal advice during Sunday's meeting.
Takiyuddin said the ROS director-general and Home Minister had filed an appeal against the High Court's decision on Friday.
The appeal's case management has been scheduled for Oct 30, a day before nomination day for the Melaka election, he said.
He stressed that the Oct 30 session would be for case management and not a hearing of the appeal itself.
"The coalition will continue preparing for the election while the legal process is ongoing," he said.
