QuickCheck: Is a ministry's name being misused in scam calls?


WHEN it comes to scams and scammers, many will try to name-drop a ministry or government department to add weight to their claims and intimidate potential victims.

It was claimed recently that the Communications Ministry's name was being misused by scammers in their calls.

Is this true?

VERDICT:

TRUE

The ministry issued a warning on this in a post on its official Facebook page, alerting the public to be wary of people misusing its name in calls.

"Check the validity of such claims before giving any personal information and lodge a police report or call the National Scam Resource Centre at 997," it said in the post.
