KUALA LUMPUR: Parents must take greater responsibility for monitoring their children's behaviour, education and social activities, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said the Cabinet meeting on Friday (Oct 30) had discussed various issues which required concerted efforts to address, with parents and families playing an important role.
Anwar said parents should be more involved in their children's upbringing.
“Sometimes, there are parents who do not even know whether their children are reading books, coming home late at night, doing their homework or beginning to get involved with drugs.
“That is why cooperation from parents and families is very important, particularly in instilling discipline in children,” he told reporters after performing Friday prayers.
Anwar said that while the government was frequently urged to take action on various social issues, parents must also recognise their own responsibility in raising and guiding their children.
“Today, I also want to appeal to parents. I want to take this opportunity to urge parents to take responsibility for their children.
“Seeing these children, who are innocent, loving and well-behaved, is very touching.
"But I worry about their circumstances and their future if parents simply leave them to their surroundings and circumstances without providing proper supervision and guidance,” he said.
