KUALA LUMPUR: Political differences should not stand in the way of building a better future for Malaysia, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said true political maturity required all parties to put national interests above narrow political considerations.
“This ensures that Malaysia remains peaceful, stable and progressive while safeguarding the well-being of the people,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday after Bersatu signed a Confidence and Supply Agreement (CSA) with the Federal Government to pledge its support for the Supply Bill 2027, or Budget 2027.
Anwar said the agreement would serve as a foundation to strengthen political stability and ensure continuity in governance, adding that the agreement would also provide room for the country’s development agenda, including Budget 2027, to be implemented effectively in the interests of the people.
“May this understanding serve as a basis for constructive cooperation, strengthen confidence in the democratic process and pave the way towards a better Malaysia for all,” he said.
Meanwhile, Anwar revealed that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was still investigating the investment by Retirement Fund Inc (KWAP) into an Indonesian aquaculture technology firm called eFishery.
In a written parliamentary reply yesterday to a question from Sabak Bernam MP Kalam Salan who asked about the parties responsible for KWAP’s failure in due diligence and sought clarification on the investment approval process, Anwar said the ongoing investigation had yet to uncover any evidence of criminal wrongdoing involving corruption or misappropriation, going by media reports in August.
“KWAP has also worked with the relevant authorities and an investor consortium to take appropriate action against those responsible.
“At the same time, efforts to maximise the recovery of the investment through appropriate channels are ongoing,” said Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister.
He said KWAP had conducted a comprehensive review of the investment’s assessment, approval and monitoring processes following the disclosures.
The findings were presented to the KWAP Board for detailed scrutiny and discussion, with follow-up action taken in line with the institution’s governance framework and accountability principles, he said.
“As a government-linked investment company (GLIC) entrusted with managing funds to finance the Federal Government’s pension liabilities, KWAP takes its responsibility to protect and grow the Fund sustainably seriously.
“Accordingly, KWAP will continue to review and strengthen its governance framework, risk management, and investment assessment and monitoring processes from time to time to safeguard the interests of the Fund and pensioners,” he said of the controversy after eFishery was found to have engaged in deliberate financial manipulation and misrepresentation in its financial reports after KWAP invested in the Indonesian aquaculture technology startup that showed huge promise before collapsing in an accounting fraud scandal.
Anwar said KWAP’s investment had undergone established assessment and governance processes, including verification by a qualified international auditor based on the information available at the time.
“Several major global institutional investors were also affected by the misconduct,” he said.
KWAP’s investment in eFishery amounted to RM163.4mil, representing a 2.51% equity stake in the company.
