KOTA KINABALU: More youths need to be involved in the agriculture and livestock industries to ensure the sector's sustainability and continuity, said Datuk Jamawi Jaafar.
The state Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industries Minister said those currently involved in the sector are getting older, so more effort is needed to attract the younger generation to take over.
He said there has to be pull factors and training for them, so that they can be the movers of this industry.
“That is why programmes like the Agriculture Basic Certificate course training session are important,” Jamawi said when closing the six-month course event in Tenom, Friday (Oct 30).
He said that with such training programmes, youths can learn more about the industry and hopefully spark more interest amongst the younger generation to be part of this sector.
He said such programmes help them understand the industry better while introducing them to the veteran players in this field, and at the same time identify as well as strengthen participants’ talents in their respective areas.
Jamawi said agriculture and livestock cultivation are among the developing sectors in Sabah, with much potential to be tapped into not only domestically but also internationally, if given the right exposure, push and support.
