MELAKA: The Melaka Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) is looking for a 44-year-old Muslim convert known as “Sultan” to assist in investigations into alleged practices contrary to Islamic teachings on Pulau Besar.
State education, higher education and religious affairs committee chairman Datuk Rahmad Mariman said JAIM’s enforcement division had conducted several rounds of surveillance on the island.
“I have instructed the department to carry out continuous monitoring, and enforcement officers conducted an inspection last week, but the man was not seen on the island.
“Information received also indicated that he has not been there since last week,” he said in a statement on Monday (Sept 14).
Rahmad said JAIM would continue working closely with the police and local fishermen to obtain further information on the man’s whereabouts.
He also reminded the public not to be influenced by rituals or other activities that contradicted Islamic teachings, including claims that amulets could bring wealth or other benefits.
“People should avoid practices that contradict Islamic teachings.
“Anyone who knows the man or has information about the alleged activities should contact the authorities for further action,” he said.
Rahmad said the case was being investigated under Section 69 of the Syariah Offences Enactment (State of Melaka) 1991 for an offence relating to worship practices.
According to a source, the man allegedly offered amulets and performed rituals purportedly to help clients find partners, ward off bad luck or gain wealth.
He also promotes his services through a TikTok account called “Perubatan Pulau Besar”, which has almost 50,000 followers.
The man is also allegedly linked to rituals involving candles and flower baths.
JAIM checks showed that the man converted to Islam on June 29, 1994, while his conversion was registered in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 21 last year.
