JAIM officer faces bribery charges


MELAKA: A Melaka Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) officer has been remanded for seven days on suspicion of accepting a bribe.

The alleged bribe, totalling RM13,125, was reportedly given by a contractor to secure service-related work at the department.

Magistrate Khairunnisak Hassni granted the remand order until Jan 13, to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old suspect was arrested at the MACC Melaka headquarters in Alai here on Monday (Jan 6) to facilitate investigation into the crime, allegedly committed two years ago.

The case is being probed under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a fine of at least five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher, and up to 20 years in prison.

MACC Melaka director Adi Supian Shafie confirmed the arrest.
