KOTA KINABALU: Only Malaysians who are original residents of Kampung Numbak here that was destroyed in a blaze on Aug 30 will be allowed to rebuild their houses, says Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah.
He said Kota Kinabalu City Hall was conducting screening to ensure that only eligible families are allowed to resettle in the area.
He said this was crucial to ensure fire victims are resettled in an orderly manner and to prevent the area from being taken over by those who should not be there.
He also said DBKK was carrying out a site inspection ahead of the rebuild.
"We will review the list of those affected by the fire and those originally supposed to occupy the area," he said after accompanying the Head of State Tun Musa Aman during a visit to fire victims at Lok Buta Settlement in Kampung Numbak, Sepanggar.
Sabin said the settlement was originally set up for residents relocated from Navy land but there were reports of outsiders constructing houses in the settlement without DBKK approval.
About 200 wooden stilt houses were destroyed in the fire that killed three children.
