Terengganu to appoint Chinese Gerakan rep as state assemblyman, says MB

PETALING JAYA: Terengganu will appoint a Chinese representative from Gerakan as an appointed state assemblyman to ensure the community has a voice in the state legislature, says Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.

Ahmad Samsuri, who is also Perikatan Nasional chairman, said the state government had decided on the appointment after considering various factors.

"After considering various matters, we have decided to appoint a Chinese member of Gerakan as an appointed state assemblyman.

"Hopefully, this will be good news for everyone," he said during a visit to Perikatan's operations room in Ayer Keroh, Melaka, on Sunday (Nov 8).

His remarks were also carried in a statement issued by the Perikatan chairman's special communications unit on the same day.

Ahmad Samsuri said the Terengganu State Constitution provided for the appointment of representatives from ethnic groups or genders not represented in the state legislative assembly.

He said the move reflected the state government's commitment to ensuring that the Chinese community had representation in the state legislature.

He also expressed hope that the appointed assemblyman would engage with people from different racial and community backgrounds.
