SEREMBAN: Former Kota assemblyman Datuk Seri Dr Awaludin Said has been elected as the 16th Speaker of the Negri Sembilan state legislative assembly, marking his second term in the post.
His name was proposed by Mentri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim and seconded hy Linggi assemblyman Datuk Mohd Faizal Ramli before the swearing in of the state assemblymen during a special assembly session on Tuesday (Aug 18) morning.
Awaludin, 65, previously served as Speaker from June 2013 to April 2018 following the 13th General Election. He was also the Barisan Nasional assemblyman for Kota from March 2004 to August 2023.
In his acceptance speech, Awaludin pledged to uphold constitutional principles and execute his duties with loyalty.
"I will fulfil my duties to the state and the federation, serve with loyalty, and preserve and defend the Laws of the Constitution of the State of Negri Sembilan 1959," he said.
Awaludin succeeds former Speaker Datuk MK Ibrahim Abdul Rahman, who is also the state Parti Amanah Negara chief.
State legislative assembly secretary Mohd Amin Ludin confirmed to the house that only one nomination was received for the post.
He also informed assemblymen that Rantau assemblyman and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan was absent from the swearing-in ceremony due to official duties in Manila.
In the Aug 1 state polls, Barisan Nasional held 18 seats in the assembly, followed by Pakatan Harapan with 11 and Perikatan Nasional with seven.
